Boston Braves play their first home game in the new National League.

April 29, 1876

[5/16] Originally the Red Caps or Nationals, they lose 3-2 to Hartford in 10 innings. in the team’s first game in the new National League. The team wins championships in 1877, 1878, 1883, 1891-1893, and is called the Beaneaters (1883-1906), the Doves (1907-1910), the Rustlers (1911). It is renamed the Braves (1912-1935) (after being purchased by James Gaffney, who had been part of New York’s Tammany Hall political machine, and whose members were known as Braves), then the Bees (1936-1940), and finally the Braves again in 1941. The team leaves Boston in 1952.*
